Eragon brings the stone home where it hatches into a dragon whom Eragon names Saphira. Two beings, called the Ra´zac, find out and come to Eragon´s home, burning the place to the ground and killing his uncle.
Once Eragon finds out his uncle is dead, he leaves his home with a man named Brom in search of the Ra´zac to avenge his uncle. Brom teaches him how to use magic and trains him in swordsmanship
Eragon and Brom finally find the Ra´zac, a battle ensues and Brom is killed while Eragon is injured. A young man named Murtagh comes across Eragon and Saphira and joins them in their journey as they trek to the Varden.
Eragon, Murtagh, and Saphira have no choice but to travel through a vast desert to get to the Varden´s hideout in the dwarves´ capitol city.
Finally reaching their destination, Eragon and the others must go through painful trials to gain the trust of the Varden, the book ends when a group of Urgals led by a Shade, attack the group, the shade mortally wounding Eragon before being killed.
