This storyboard shows the journey a sperm has to go through before fertilization.
Stage 1: Entrance to the Vagina
Time to find a mate!
Watch out for me! I´m the vaginas deadly acid!
Stage 2: Journey to the Cervix
We have to make it to the red circle!
Yeah let´s go to the cervix!
Stage 3: Uterus
We made it to the uterus!
Watch out sperm, this is MY turf!
We are getting closer!
The seals represent sperm, and the ocean represents the vagina. The seals are going into the ocean just like sperm go into a female´s vagina. But within minutes, millions of them are killed by acids. (Shark)
Stage 4 & 5: Uterotubal Junction and the Fallopian Tube
After the sperm enter the vagina, they make their way to the cervical canal. By now, less than 1% are alive.
Stage 6: Fertilization
I beat all the other seals!
The sperm have made their way through the cervix and into the uterus. In the uterus, there are deadly white blood cells. (represented by polar bears)
Stage 7: Implantation
The sperm make their way out of the uterus and go through the uterotubal junction, which is the passage way to the fallopian tube. The fallopian tube is connected to the ovary, which is the home of the egg.
I will get there first!
No, I will!
When the moment of fertilization finally occurs, the egg is pushed of the ovary and meets with the one surviving sperm. This is called conception and/or fertilization.
My love! You have finally come for me!
The now fertilized egg travels back down the Fallopian tube and into the uterus. This is called implantation. The fertilized egg will grow into a baby for nine months.
