  • Mr. Hopper attends a funeral. "Mr. Hooper, pacing slowly his meditative way towards the meetinghouse. " (Hawthrone 235)
  • Mr. Hopper comes to church and is wearing. a black veil. “But what has good Parson Hooper got upon his face?” cried the sexton in astonishment." (Hawthrone 235)
  • Mr. Hoppers soon to be wife, Elizabeth asks him why he wears the vail and to take it off. “Take away the veil from them, at least.” (Hawthrone 242)
  • Mr. Hopper is on his death bed and is madabout people judging him for wearing a mask. "Have men avoided me, and women shown no pity, and children screamed and fled, only for my black veil?" (Hawthrone 246)
