In 1917, the Eighteenth Amendment was passed, which made the sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcohol illegal. This enraged many citizens because they felt as if they had a right to drink alcohol. This amendment led to many riots and protest against this new law.
Not being able to get alcohol legally led to the illegal purchasing and selling of it secretly at places called speakeasies. Speakeasies are bars and nightclubs where you could buy alcohol in secret.
A result of being caught with alcohol resulted in paying a fine of $1000 and going to jail for six months.
