  • One major theme of The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street by Rod Serling is, Prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy. The first piece of evidence on page 78 is Les Goodman's car starting up by itself. The people are suspicious because nothing else is working on the block as well. After the people of Maple Street find out there might be a monster among them they begin to be suspicious of one another. When Goodman's car started the neighbors started to murmur and accuse him. This causes fear and causes division in the people. In fact, because of this division an argument breaks out between Charlie and Steve. The argument is about whether to trust Goodman or not. Due to the argument their friendship is destroyed. Therefore this shows why suspicion can be harmful. Another piece of evidence on page 82 that supports my theme is the shooting of Pete Van Horn. This is because the neighbors on Maple Street were frightened because of a figure approaching, due to the fear of danger. Therefore without thinking logically Charlie shoots the figure out of fear. This caused people to no longer think about others. To the point where they attack Charlie and his house. Finally, my last piece of evidence on page 84-85 is Charlie calling Tommy a monster. This evidence supports my theme because after the accusation, the neighbors began to question everyone. Additionally, they started turning on each other and becoming violent. This shows how suspicion destroyed and killed citizens throught out Maple Street. In conclusion, these pieces of evidence support the major theme of Maple Street, Prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy.
