  • My unit got ambushed from behind, so we fled to the trees for cover.
  • James Fleming, a young man of 18 years old, has finally left his farm in Mississippi to join the Union army in Virginia. However, his largely wanders from one place to another, never really seeing combat.
  • Climax
  • While James fights initially , he is quickly overcome by fear as he see's many of his fellow soldiers fleeing from the first battle. James turns and runs away from the battle, fleeing into the woods plagued by fear, guilt, and shame.
  • Falling Action
  • James meets up with a wounded unit of soldiers, including his Brother Nick Fleming was one of the wounded soldiers. I didn't want to tell my brother that I just fled from the battle, so I didn't say anything. He looked really sick and pale though. I asked if he was going to be okay. He said It's just a wound, I'll be fine. My Brother was always so brave unlike me. And before I knew it, there he was laying there dead on his back. I was in shock, of the sight I has just witnessed.
  • Resolution
  • James was led back to his regiment by an old cheery man, who had been shot in the head. After enduring the loss of his brother he knew had to promise him one thing, that he was going to try to be brave. James keeps his cowardice from his comrades and becomes a "war devil". James becomes the color bearer for the next battle after saving the flag from a dying color bearer.
  • The regiment squares off against rebels hiding behind a farmers fence. their lines are quickly dwindling, so they realize they have to charge the hence. James locks his sights on the rebels flag bearer, he goes after him and kills him. The Union win the battle and head back to camp.
  • James is again plagued by guilt for his actions on the previous day. He recalls his cowardice, and it starts to cause him despair. however, he begins to see that he has made up for these mistakes as a color bearer, and he finds peace within himself for his actions.
