Storyboard Text

  • In many upland areas, the soil is very poor. However, local people have indigenous knowledge about their environment. They know what will grow and what will not grow. Many people in upland areas use "swidden farming." They clear a piece of forest, burn the vegetation and then plant crops for a few years.
  • There is the dairy farming region. Which is totally unrelated to my field of work. They breed cows and cattle for milk while I grow cotton for...well...cotton. Dairy farming can be done in virtually any place on Earth. But cotton plantations require a specific climate. To be precise it needs a tropical or subtropical climate to grow.
  • And there is this region which makes no sense to me. They call it Shifting Cultivation. They mercilessly slash and burn the forests and use it for only a year or two. Then they go about cutting down even more of the forests. What a waste of forests, land and time... But we plantation owners are simple. We just use the same land over and over again for many years, although we might leave the fields fallow for a while.
