  •  How, then, am I mad? Hearken! that damned eye that haunts me day and night.
  • It wasn't the old man who vexed me it was the eye!
  • "I threw open the lantern and leaped into the room. He shrieked once—once only. In an instant, I dragged him to the floor and pulled the heavy bed over him."
  • AHHH!
  • This scene leads showing how mad this man is and hints at what he will do next. The author would include this scene because it shows his chartists in the beginning of the story   
  • "First of all, I dismembered the corpse. I cut off the head and the arms and the legs. I then took up three planks from the flooring of the chamber and deposited all between the scantlings." (Poe).  
  • This scene shows how he feels about the old man. It also shows where he will kill him, It also is the buildup for the story.
