On Kapiti before we came, there was a flourishing Maori tribe that sought food for winter so they sent the women and children into the mainland to gather food for the upcoming winter. Among them there was a young woman called kake who was the best swimmer in the whole tribe. She could hold her breath for longer ,could swim faster ,and could dive deaper than all the men. She was married to a warrior and had many children.
On a stormy day by the whikania river she spotted another maori tribe heading right for kapiti
Then it her how to get there the thing she had trained in her whole life but she couldent leave her baby.
Oh no I must warn the others, but how?
Using Harakeke she made a basket for her baby so she could swim with her baby.
After she made the basket she was set and ready to plunge head first into the cold teranchel water that separated kapiti from the mainland
No matter how treacherous the waves that surrounded kapiti were she would'nt give up and before daybreak she had made her way on to kapitis shore.
When she had made it on to the shore of kapiti she imformed her tribe of what she had seen, so when nightfall came the native's of kapiti island had prepared fought and won outnumbered.
