  • Thermal energy is the result of molecules vibrating and results in objects having different temperatures. objects that are touching each other and are different temperatures will randomly transfer heat to become the same temperature.
  • As the coffee cools to reach the temperature of its surroundings, the molecules vibrate less and the coffee begins to lose its thermal energy.
  • Sound energy is the result of two objects colliding and pushing on the air molecules next to them, which in turn push on the air molecules next to them, and so on, creating a sound wave that travels away from the objects.
  • When the child hits the bottle with the bone, the vibrations from the collision cause the air molecules around the objects to vibrate, creating a sound.
  • If we pretend these shapes are a piece of metal with a magnet on each end. If we spin the piece of metal in the middle, an electric current will be created, the same way a generator creates one.
  • Electrical energy is caused by the movement of electrons which can easily be made to move between atoms if a metal is put in an electrical or magnetic field.
  • Radiant energy is associated with the movement of light and electromagnetic waves. Radiant energy covers all visible and invisible waves, such as x-rays, gamma rays, and micro waves, as well as visible light.
  • The visible light emitted by the sun is an example of radiant energy, however, not all radiant energy is visible, such as radio waves and gamma waves.
  • Chemical energy is stored in the bonds of molecules. When the molecules are used in a reaction such as combustion or metabolism, the energy is released
  • When a cell metabolizes, it combines the calories from your food with oxygen to produce ATP. The chemical energy stored within the ATP is released when a phosphate breaks off.
