  • Adams sent U.S diplomats to Paris to smooth over the conflict and to negotiate a treaty.
  • France sent 3 French agents in secret to meet with american diplomats they said that Talleyrand would discuss a treaty only in exchange for a $250,000 bribe. The French government also wanted to loan of $12 million.
  • The XYZ Affair announced, Federalists call for war.
  • We call for war!
  • Adam is prepared for war, but does not declare because he was worried about its cost.
  • But I will not declare.
  • I prepare for war.
  • American and French ships began fighting each other in the Caribbean.
  • The United States and France eventually signed a peace treaty.
