I just came back from my soccer game. Besides, how could I miss the lunar eclipse that's happening today?!
I didn't know you were in town today!! What brought you back to this old town?
A lunar eclipse is when earth blocks the sun from the moon and it´s umbra completely covers the moon. The umbra is the darkest shadow that casts a shadow on Earth.
I've heard of that before but what is it exactly?
Yep, you learn fast. Here I think it's about to happen c'mon!!!
That's so cool! That means the geometry of a lunar eclipse goes Sun, Earth Moon or SEM! I never knew that before!
We see the total lunar eclipse right now because it's night time. But, sometimes a partial lunar eclipse hapeens when the Earth cannot completely block the light from the moon . The moon only partially passes through the umbra.
Oh, I forgot about that! We don't have lunar eclipses every month because the moon´s orbit it tilted as it moves around Earth. This makes it difficult for the moon or Earth to cast shadows on each other.
That's amazing but how come we don't see lunar eclipses every month, even when we have full moons every month too?
That's interesting for sure. It doesn't require glasses either because it's at night time! Well, we have to go home before mom does. Let's go!
And one last thing,The moon appears red during a lunar eclipse because as sunlight passes through our atmosphere, the gases bend the light around Earth like a prism would. Longer wavelengths of light, like red are seen while blue is hidden or scattered.
