The Athenians were residents of the ancient city-state of Greece. The Athens were around in the 5th century BC.

Sparta was war-like people, the Athenians were dedicated to excellence, artistry, and knowledge. These people valued individual freedom and established the first democracy.

The reason they wanted to fight each other was because sometimes it's traced back to when the democratic reforms of Cleisthenes, and in this case Sparta always opposed. Sparta also happened to cut off Athenians food supplies and trade.
Sparta has defeated the Athens.
Both Sparta and Athens began to fight and this battle was named the "Peleonsian War"
During the great fight, the Spartans grew to be more powerful and then tensions rose between the two and it almost escalated to nearly three decades of war. The Athens then emerged victorious, while the constant fighting left the Athens . . .
Then left the Athens bankrupt, exhausted and demoralized. Although neither city-state regained the military strength they once had.
