In 1954, on September 8th, Ruby Bridges was born in Tylertown, Mississippi to her parents Abon and Lucille Bridges.
When Ruby was 4 years old, her parents moved to New Orleans. In kindergarten, Ruby was one of six black children chosen to take a test determining if they could go to an all-white school.
Ruby passed the test, but when she and her mother walked to school, federal marshals escorted them t o protect the Bridges' from the angry white crowd protesting Ruby desegregating William Frantz School.
But for a long time, Ruby was the only student in her class because all the white parents had pulled their kids out of her class. The only teacher willing to teach Ruby was Mrs.Henry, a kind woman from Boston.
After graduating from high school and becoming a travel agent, Ruby married a man named Malcolm Hall. They had 4 sons together named Craig, Sean and Christopher.
Ruby has traveled around the world speaking to people about racism. She has even traveled to schools talking to kids about her story.
