  •     The North didn't want slaves. However, the South wanted everything to do with slaves this cause a huge disagreement between the North and South. The South feared California becoming a state because they didn't want slavery. This means that the South would be outnumbered.

  • California was able to enter the Union as a free state. The rest of the Mexican Cession was divided into two territories. Those territories were Utah and New Mexico. Popular sovereignty is how slavery laws would be decided.

  • The Fugitive Slave Act was created to make it a crime to help runaway slaves and allowed officials to arrest those slaves in free areas. The South was upset because they couldn't get a good trial. Uncle Tom's Cabin was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It was written to inform people about the evils of slavery. "I won't be taken, Eliza; I'll die first!

  • The Kansas-Nebraska Act was a plan that would divide the remainder of the Louisiana Purchase into two territories, Kansas and Nebraska. They would allow people in each territory to decide on slavery. Bleeding Kansas was between two groups who began to fight resulting in the death of over 200 people.
  • The court reasoning was Congress could not ban slavery in the federal territories. It mattered because they had no right to ban slavery in federal territories. <<>> John Brown wanted to start a Slave rebellion.  Federal troops stopped him and he was convicted of treason, murder, and conspiracy.
