While still a young boy, Juan went to work as a squire for a knight named Don Pedro Nunez de Guzman. As Juan grew older, the knight taught him how to fight. He learned how to fight from a horse and took part in battles.

A decade later, he was serving as governor of the eastern province of Hispaniola when he decided to explore a nearby island, which became Puerto Rico.
There was a rumored fountain of youth on an island known as Bimini, this expedition was led by Ponce de Leon going to the coast of what is now Florida in 1513. He went to colonize the region but then was heavily wounded in an Indian attack after he arrived.
