  • Hello and welcome to this years science lesson on Newton's laws of motion.  My name is Professor John and I'm glad to have you all here!
  • To start things off, lets talk about Newton's first law. An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion (with the same speed and direction) unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
  • To put this into perspective, lets say a ball is sitting with no motion on a completely flat plane. It will continue to have no motion until someone runs up and kicks it changing its speed and direction.  Assuming there is no gravity and friction it will continue moving in that direction with the same speed, forever.
  • One Christmas eve, my reindeer suddenly stopped flying because Rudolph had an awful cold turning his nose even redder,  blinding the reindeer. The sudden stop made my sleigh jerk forward causing me to lose a few presents.
  • Does anyone have any real world experiences with Newton's first law?
  • That's where my PS4 went!!!
  • Moving on, in all seriousness, does anyone have a TYPICAL experience with Newton's first law?
  • Many times when I'm driving my car, the light turns yellow at the last second and I hit the brakes hard. The sudden stop makes my body jerk forward.
