  • Pattillo Higgins was a brick factory owner .Pattilo Higgins  believed that oil would be found in Spindletop. Salt domes are underground formation .Higgins and some friends worked to form Gladys city oil. They drilled three wells in spindletop,but it didn’t strike oil.Anthony F Lucas was and engineer who responded to Higgins ad.He started drilling in 1900,575 feet down.Lucas had found some traces of oil,but it wasn’t strong enough.Lucas continued drilling. A man who worked in spindletop described big oil strike in 1901.
  • Cattle Developed spanish breeds,they were also suited in life. They became more valuable during ranching in 1850s. Longhorns were very strong animals. They ate prickly pear cactus during droughts.Longhorns were resistant to cattle disease. Longhorns weighed up to 1,600 pounds. Long legs also  allowed longhorns to walk long distances. There horns protected them from mountain lions ,wolves and other animals. People used longhorns to decorate their homes,they even stored gunpowder in longhorn horns.The Longhorns became more valuable as cattle ranching.Many of these were unclaimed cattle.
  • Commercial  farming started  during late 1800s.Cotton brought larger profits per acre,It grew well in states. Texas farmers produced about 57 million worth of cotton,railroads also  provided a cheaper way to ship cotton.Railroads also opened new areas from 1874 to 1878. The number of cotton shipped grew quickly.West texas Experienced more dramatic shifts.This rise value was the result of increased crops.
