  • I'm going to build an army!
  • Oh No! He's building an army and we aren't friends.  I'd better build one too.
  • Militarism
  • European nations began building up their armies in case a war broke out.  This created distrust between countries.
  • Alliances
  • European countries were forming alliances with each other and drawing each other into the war when it erupted.  This also caused tensions between nations not in alliances with each other.
  • Imperialism
  • Mine!
  • Many European countries were fighting for control of Africa. This created oversea tension that was transported back to Europe.
  • No, Mine!
  • Nationalism
  • My country's better!
  • No, mine is!
  • Many countries in Europe grew to believe that they were better than others.   Also, certain ethnic groups wanted to break off of larger countries and form their own nations.
  • The Sinking of The Lusitania
  • When the passenger boat, The Lusitania, was attacked and sank without warning off the coast of Ireland, 128 Americans died.  This enraged Americans who began to call louder for war.
  • The Zimmermann Note
  • How dare Germany offer American land to Mexico!
  • Arthur Zimmermann of Germany sent a message to Mexico promising American lands if Mexico helped win the war.  This obviously angered Americans and drove them to support the war.
