  • Ah right,
  • Cyanide is a poison that prevents ATP production via aerobic respiration.
  • It can destroy your respiration at ease!
  • IV
  • Cyanide
  • Cyanide is one of the most potent intracellular and lethal poison known to man.
  • It binds to an allosteric site on the enzyme cytochrome oxidase which takes part in respiration reactions in cells.
  • If this enzyme is inhibited, ATP cannot be made since the oxygen is decreased.
  • The binding of the cyanide to the allosteric site causes a conformation al change to the enzyme’s active site.
  • Now, the active site of cytochrome oxidase (enzyme) and its substrate no longer share specificity
  • it can no longer catalyze a reaction for ATP production via aerobic respiration.
  • Therefore, Cyanide is a Non-competitive inhibitor!
