  • Types of Stress Tension
  • Tension is when the earth's crust gets pulled on by stress. Which slowly stretches the rock apart. It happens when multiple plates move.
  • Shearing is caused by stress with such a strength that move the mass of rock in opposite directions. Which overtime can cause rock to break of slip. Changing the shape of the plate.

  • Compression is when stress pulls the rocks together and makes them fold or break apart. 
  • Faults Strike Slip
  • A strike-slip fault is caused by shearing. In a strike-slip fault, the rocks on either side slide past each other sideways and with little upward or downward force. 
  • A normal fault is caused by tension. In a normal fault, the fault is at an angle, the masses of rock are on top of one another. The mass of rock above is called a hanging wall and the mass below is called the footwall

  • A reverse fault is powered by compression. A reverse fault is  almost the same as a normal fault but masses of rocks move toward each other instead of away from each other. Reverse faults make mountains. In a reverse faults the rock moves on top of each other
