  • This is Bill and Braylon they are on the TU football team. They are trying to use geometry in football.
  • This is Drake and Josh; they are on the TU football team. They are trying to use geometry in football.
  • I was wondering if we can find the distance from the goal post to the ball?
  • I am wondering if we can find the distance from the goal post to the ball.
  • I think we can do it by using the right triangle relationship with tangent.
  • I think we can do it by using the right triangle relationship with tangent
  • The angle of the ball off the turf is 23 degrees
  • The angle between the ball and turf is 23 degrees
  • Since the height of the goal post is 30 ft: tan (23) = 30 / xThe distance between the goal post and ball - x, is almost 71ft
  • Since the height of the goal post is 30ft : tan (23) = 30/ xThe distance between the goal post and ball - x is almost 71ft
  • If we know the sides of the triangle I think we can use the herons formula to calculate the area.
  • We are forming a triangle. Can we somehow find the area of this triangle ?
  • That's great we can calculate the area by taking the square root of the product s= (6+8+10)/2=12 The area will be equal to square root of the product of the difference between s and each of the sides and s. 12*(12-6)*(12-8)*(12-10)Area = square root of 576, which = 24
  • 10ft
  • 8ft
  • The sides of this triangle are : 6ft, 8ft, 10ft
  • 6ft
  • I did too
  • 10ft
