  • 1073 Gregory's Election
  • Welcome Gregory VII, the new pope of Rome!
  • Gregory's Rules and Decrees
  •  Kings are not allowed to appoint priests, bishops, and heads of monasteries.
  • Priests are now no longer to marry and offices cannot be sold.
  • Henry's Reason for Anger
  • I must go tell the bishops that Gregory is no longer pope.
  • Why does he get to make the rules? It's my duty to appoint the church officials.
  • Gregory was elected the pope of Rome in 1073.
  • Henry's new rules
  • I now declare that Gregory is no longer pope!
  • Gregory made it so that priests can't marry and that people couldn't buy church officers. He also banned kings from appointing priests, bishops, and heads of monasteries.
  • The excommunication
  • Please let me into the church! Please forgive me!
  • Gregory's ruling angered Henry. It was Henry's job to appoint church officials.
  • The resolution or end of conflict
  • Since Henry was angry, he called his bishops and declared that Gregory was not pope anymore.
  • Gregory was angry that he was no longer pope. He kicked him out of the church, told him he wont go to heaven, and and said his subjects would no longer obey him.
  • You are not allowed to come to the church anymore. You will never go to heaven!
  • Henry begged to be forgiven and he was accepted back into the church.
  • Fine!
