Storyboard Text

  • Around the year A.D. 900, the Shona people built a wealthy and powerful kingdom in what is now Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
  • 20,000 people lived in the city and surrounding valley.
  • Zimbabwe is a Shona word that means "stone houses".
  • Great Zimbabwe was the largest of many similar cities throughout the region.
  • By the 1300s, it had become a great comercial center.
  • Great Zimbabwe was later abandoned in the 1400s.
  • This was probably because the growing population exhausted its water and food.
  • The city's ruins show the Shona's skill as builders.
