One summer morning, Elder Lowanna Song called a young boy by the name of Kirra Munsee to talk to her in the woods. She explained to him that it was time for him to go on a journey, one that he has only ever learned about through stories. She told him that he will embark on a vision quest where he must search for spirit helpers to give him guidance through this rite of passage.
Kirra was told that he needed to find a space special to him, and a spot immediately came to mind. Ever since he was a kid, Kirra would come to this spot to think and to have a peace of mind. He loved this place and without a doubt wanted this to be his spot for his vision quest.
Kirra and Elder Lowanna were in the sweat lodge for several hours. Elder Lowanna helped guide Kirra through this process through her prayers, stories, and conversation. Throughout the time in there, Kirra felt a relief off his shoulders. It was as if he had been carrying something heavy for his whole life and finally put it down. Elder Lowanna said to him that the sweat lodge was used to purify the body, mind, spirit, and heart. Kirra felt purified.
Elder Lowanna! Elder Lowanna!
After the sweat lodge, Kirra walked outside and stared out at the water, waiting for his vision to arrive. He sat for about an hour and then he saw it. He immediately stood up and looked across the water just to see a fox through the fog. The fog was thick, and Kirra couldn't see much, but he saw the face of the fox as the creature sat there. They looked at each other for what seemed to be hours. Kirra never felt as calm and protected as he did then. Suddenly, the fox was gone.
On his way home, all Kirra could think about was his vision. Even with all the stories he has been taught, he still doesn't fully understand the vision. He knows that foxes symbolizes intelligence so does that mean he's smart now? He was confused. He was urgent to find Elder Lowanna so he could ask for her help.
Kirra was excited when he saw Elder Lowanna. He shouted her name when he saw her. He ran up to her and told her about his vision. She explained to him that the fox did mean intelligence, but also protection and help to those in need. She said to him, that although foxes are minor spirit animals, they are fiercely important in the way of life. She told him that he has now come into adulthood and will soon get a new name. Kirra felt like he can now see the world with new eyes. He felt like a different person. He was happy.
