Jean-Jacques Dessalines and Henry Christophe led a black army against the French in 1802 in response to Napoleon Bonaparte's intent to restore slavery. They defeated the French, who surrendered and left.
On January 1, 1804, the island was declared independent as Haiti.
It was not until 1825 that France recognized Haiti's independence, and only in exchange for 100 million francs.
