The story begins on the island of Jernfield, where a 19 year old boy named Kylian Jurgensquire cares for his sick mother, who has gone insane and makes some pretty bad choices. The trouble is that Kylian is a naturally born soccer player who has been offered a deal with a club.
Kylian is asked to play for a soccer club who will pay him a lot of money if he plays with them, which is kind of what his family needs, as they are in a bit of a financial crisis at the moment.
CROSSING THE THRESHOLD
Kylian wants to take the offer, but, if he does, no one will be able to take care of his mother.
Kylian decides to have a training session with the club to see if it is worth it to take the deal and play. So he asks for some advice from one of his fellow players, but little does he know that this guy is the bully in the team. He tells Kylian to give up on his mother and focus on playing. Kylian then tells him that if he does that then his mother will die, the bully simply replies, so.
Kylian thoroughly enjoyed the training but if he takes the job he has to move 42,000 kilometres away from his mother. He doesn't know what to do, so, he asks if he can have some more time to think so that he can consult his mother or see if he can find someone else to look after her.
Kylian now has to make a big decision regarding his mother because she most definitely cannot take care of herself alone. He decides to contact the local nursing home who turn out to be the most unhelpful people Kylian has ever talked to over the phone, so, he goes to talk to them in person.
