  • Early Presidents' Successes 
  • Washington's actions as the first president, allowed for him to set strong precedents for a strong executive branch and central government. He also ratified Jay's Treaty with hopes to prevent another war. 
  • George Washington
  • The US bought the Louisiana Purchase from France, gaining about 828,000 square miles of land  Lewis and Clark traveled across America and discovered new animals and plants.
  • Thomas Jefferson
  • The XYZ Affair took place, three French emissaries demanded America to pay a $250, 000 bribe and a $10 million loan, but the Americans did not pay for either of these fees. 
  • John Adams
  • Also, the Alien and Sedition Acts were passed: It increased the required amount of years before an immigrant could become a citizen from 5 to 14, gave the President the power to deport or imprison any foreign person who was believed to be dangerous, and said that it was a crime to write hateful things about the government.

  • Britain took American seamen into the Navy without any notice, angering the Americans which causes the War of 1812.
