  • Because of the harsh winters and rocky soil, the pilgrims could not farm so, fishing, whaling, and timber are what kept Plymouth running. The only farming done was subsistence farming.
  • Social
  • The separatists, pilgrims, came to the new world to escape religious persecution. Families along with their servants traveled across the ocean.
  • The pilgrims created a form of government called the Mayflower Compact because King James l was away in England. The compact made Plymouth have a representative government so they had town meetings.
  • William Bradford and other separatists left England on a boat called the Mayflower. They were headed to Virginia, but a storm blew them off course and they landed in Massachusetts. They started a colony on Plymouth rock and became known as the pilgrims.
