Because of the harsh winters and rocky soil, the pilgrims could not farm so, fishing, whaling, and timber are what kept Plymouth running. The only farming done was subsistence farming.
The separatists, pilgrims, came to the new world to escape religious persecution. Families along with their servants traveled across the ocean.
The pilgrims created a form of government called the Mayflower Compact because King James l was away in England. The compact made Plymouth have a representative government so they had town meetings.
William Bradford and other separatists left England on a boat called the Mayflower. They were headed to Virginia, but a storm blew them off course and they landed in Massachusetts. They started a colony on Plymouth rock and became known as the pilgrims.
