Should I go to Lowell? Or was she lying? Two whole dollars is too much money.
Man Vs Society
Ladies, We are speeding the machinery so we can win the competition.
OWW! The machinery hit me!
Lyddie wore Mistress Cutler's fancy dress to her home and then when she came back, Mistress Cutler was very furious and fired Lyddie. "You're dismissed"... "You're wearing my dress!" "Yes, ma'am. Shall I wash it before I go or--?" "Don't be impertinent!" (pg. 44)
Lyddie was having trouble within herself because once she heard the factory girl, she was thinking about going to Lowell, but she will be farther from home and Charlie. "The lady had been lying, of course. But still, how had a farmer's daughter bought a silk dress?" (Pg.26)
Lyddie was working with four looms, and the speed of the looms went crazy that it had injured Lyddie. The overseers sped up the looms because the overseers wanted to win the competition of who could make the most goods. "The overseers were being offered premium--prizes to the men whose girls produced the most goods in a pay period--which was why the machines were speeded."(pg.99-100)
