The man continues on his journey and fell through the ice, his feet get soaked and he tries to build his fire to dry his shoes, socks, and to warm up his feet. the matches do not work but he finds an alternative way to start the fire.
A big tree stands over the fire. With a gust of wind a pile of snow falls off of the tree branches and onto the fire putting it out. the man is desperate to stay warm and decides to kill the dog. he lunges at the dog with his bare hands and tries to strangle him but the dog fights back and the man tries to run, he collapses in the snow and lays there.
The man fails to kill the dog because he cant feel his fingers. the man tries to escape and run but he trips and falls into the cold snow. as the man laid there he accepted death as he knew that he would freeze to death, he thinks about the old man's warning and how he should have listened to him.
After a while the man freezes to death and dies, right before his death all he could think about was the old man's warning, to not travel alone, and how he should have listened. The dog sees that the man is dead and moves on.
