Impact of the Railroad
Coming sir, where will we stop in California?
1865 Home stead acts would give 160 acres of free land to anyone who would live in the land for 5 years and would fix it. The farmers who would farm on these acres found it difficult to farm in eastern NM. Some would be kicked out because it was hard for them to fix and farm on it.
I need some more water lady!
The Santa Fe railroad was the first railroad to be built in NM. It started from the beginning of Mountain Branch and eventually stretched to Raton NM and Deming. As a result more people came and more jobs opened up.
Explorers looked for gold and silver in NM since the 1540. Gold mining increased since more and more minors came. SIlver city, White oaks, and Lake valley were considered Boom towns. two out of these three towns became ghost towns after they ran out of mining to do.
Tourist would stop at Harvey Houses to eat while traveling but some would complain how the food options they had was a little and wasn't the best food. Harvey Houses was owned by Fred Harvey. A business man from England and would always have fair pricing.
Tourism was one of the largest jobs in New Mexico. Railroads brought numbers of groups of people who bought train tickets to New Mexico, food, and souvenirs that back then were Indian pottery and rugs. Many liked to learn about the southwest culture. Mostly the Indian pueblos.
The wild west was one of the more crutial times in New mexico history. While most of the people in New Mexico were good people there would be guys who would be dishonest and come to the farms and steal farmers cattle. They would also steal silver and gold from minors in New Mexico. Violent men would want to resolve their problems with weapons.
