Storyboard Text

  • We need our entire extended family to help us harvest these crops other wise we can not trade.
  • We settle to the south of the Sahara other ways known as the Sahel or the Savanna
  • We, the extended families, ban together in villages to get needed help.
  • Our villages could be located by lakes and we collect the food. For example, we collected millets, grains, sorghum, and rice, grass for animals, and fish from the rivers.
  • We control flooding rivers, mine for iron or gold, or build high walls to protect the villager inside and armies.
  • We are making a high wall to control trade, protect the citizens inside, and to demonstrate status.
  • We are trading our surplus goods such as catfish, fish oil, onions and rice for cooper, iron ore, salt, and gold.
  • Some rulers of some trading cities become wealthy by collecting taxes. With wealth, my king can protect our people by getting a professional army.
  • Our armies can now conquer other trading armies nearby. Then, our ruler can take over the trade of those areas and become wealthier.
  • Our king also collects tributes from the people they conquered, which is money that the king collects. The payments of tribute was a sign that overcomes people accept the king's authority.
