  • President Jackson wanted to secure land for the common man by moving the Native Americans off of the land.

  • Therefore, Jackson urged Congress to pass the Indian Removal Act. It authorized the removal of Native Americans from land east of the Mississippi River to the West.

  • Many white settlers were not very fond of their Native American neighbors.
  • Many Cherokee had believed that they could prevent conflict and removal by adopting white culture. They claimed to be an independent nation.
  • US soldiers were used to physically remove resisting Indians from their land. The soldiers showed no mercy and lied to motivate the Indians to leave.
  • The Native Americans were forced to march 80 miles west to new land without food or supplies. 1/4 of the native populations died along the Trial of Tears.
