Kathy H. Introduces herself to the reader as a "Carer". The readers do not yet know what this means, however she begins a flashback that will enlighten them.
Kathy begins her flashback by vaguely outlining the institution where she grew up: A school called "Hailsham" which she alludes to as where she prefers her donors come from.
Kathy shares an anecdote about one of her peers, a "friend" named Tommy. She talks about him playing football, and being an oddball. She describes an awkward run in on the stairwell.
Readers are told that students aren't given many opportunities to own their own property, and that one of the few ways they are able to do so is by purchasing them at 'sales'.
Ms. Lucy warns the children about the dangers of dreaming about lives they know they won't have. It is at this point the readers learn that the students of Hailsham are all going to be harvested for their vital organs.
Jenni and Rob are caught 'doing the do' in a classroom, which are considered off limits after hours. This leads Kathy to discuss the dynamics of sex at Hailsham, and how she is afraid of missing out.
