Please don't overreact. Many of the villagers want to go back home.
You may now look at your paper, Hutchinsons.
Uh oh. What should I do? At least my children didn't get chosen.
The New Lottery by Brandon Lee
After the Hutchinsons got chosen, Mr. Summers told the family to look down at their slip of paper. There was a moment of silence when they looked at their small, white sheets of paper.
THIS ISN'T FAIR! LET US CHOOSE AGAIN, PLEASE! THAT WAS NOT FAIR! BILL HAD NO TIME!
It's okay, mom. You'll survive.
Tessie Hutchinson was shocked as she looked at her slip of paper. It had a black dot on it, and she felt like she was going to cry. This day was always terrifying, but she survived, until now. She would need a plan to escape without anyone noticing.
HONEY, COME BACK! I LOVE YOU!
GET BACK HERE, TESSIE! IT'S A TRADITION!
Come on Tessie. Just keep running. Don't listen to them.
Many of the villagers noticed that Tessie was the only one who had a shocked reaction. Everyone knew that Tessie was the one with the black dot, so they were starting to gather the rocks.
The villagers were going to pick up their rocks, and Tessie started screaming that it wasn't fair that this was happening to her. She made up a quick plan to escape the villagers while they weren't looking.
As the villagers were looking for the piles of rocks, Tessie dashed out of the village as fast as she could. The villagers started to notice, but it was too late. Mrs. Hutchinson successfully escaped the villagers, while ignoring their comments.
