  • IN 1066, Edward the confessor died without an heir
  • Three men claimed the throne of England: King Herald Hardrada of Norway; Harold Godwinson, Earl of Essex; and William Duke of Normandy.
  • Godwinson killed Hardrada in the Battle of Stamford bridge
  • after Harold Godwinson was crowned, the others were not happy. Harald Hardrada invaded England with a fleet of 300 ships
  • from the great vistory Harold gained a great horse man with knowledge of the Norman landing and strength invading army.Godwinson weekend his forces by sending many of his best men to man a fleet of 700 ships
  • The battle commenced!Thus the battle raged for some time with the utmost violence on both sides
  • William, taking off his helmet and exposing his naked head, he shouted, "see, I am here, I am still living, and by God's help I shall yet have victory!"William directed his archers not to shoot horizontally but vertically towards the sky, killing the more distant troops and one pierced the gallant Harold in the eye.William was crowned King of England on Christmas Day 1066.
