The wise men predicted that the prince would become a Buddha and the king didn't want this. The king built him three palaces to make life in the palace so pleasant that the prince would never want to leave.
The prince was not happy with the palace life and wanted to see the outside world. He made four trips outside the palace and on his fourth trip, he saw a monk who had given up everything he owned so the prince said I will be like him.
The Buddha Teaches
Siddhartha renamed himself Gautama. For six years he practiced severe asceticism. then he realized that he hated being rich and hated being poor.
The Last Years
Gautama sat under the Bodhi tree in deep meditation and he gained the most supreme wisdom. He became the Buddha, or The Awakened One.
For the next forty-five years, the Buddha and his disciples went from place to place in India spreading the Dharma. He never became angry or impatient or spoke harshly to anyone, not even to those who opposed him.
Shakyamuni Buddha passed away at the age of eighty. The Buddha realized that he was not the first to become a Buddha. The two main goals of Buddhism are getting to know ourselves and learning the Buddha's teachings.
