Ismene - Introduction
Ismene, I am stepping down from the throne. As the last living member of the royal family, I hereby pronounce you Queen of Thebes.
I accept the position
Argos' army is massing at our gates! They are going to attack!
My queen, we must act or be destroyed!
By all the gods! I shall take cover in the palace!
The Chorus sings about Ismene's past misfortune and her future misfortune to come.
Long live Polyneices!
Death to Thebes!
CREON is mourning his dead family, and steps down from the throne. ISMENE reluctantly accepts.
We have taken over the city!
You will never rule again.
The SENTRY is agitated as he brings news of Argos' threat of war. ISMENE is terrified and decides to hide instead of fight back.
I was a coward! I should have faced my fear and accepted death if it came to me!
ARGOS' ARMY is bitter at their previous defeat, and storms Thebes. ISMENE and CREON are driven out of the castle.
ISMENE and CREON are imprisoned in their own castle. They are both very frightened.
ISMENE finally realizes her mistake in cowardice and mourns her city. CREON agrees and remembers his own tragic mistakes.
We all have to learn the pain of our mistakes, Ismene. You are no exception. And now you must pay the price of your misjudgment.
