Romulus and Remus were born the children of Rhea Silvia and Mars. Rhea Silvia was a Vestal Virgin and King Amulius had to punish her, but couldn't anger the gods.
King Amulius chose to imprison Rhea Silvia and send Romulus and Remus down a river to die. The god Tibernus helped the babies to survive and placed them in the care of Lupa, a she-wolf.
The State of Roma
Romulus and Remus were raised shepherds by Faustulus and Acca Larentia. During a shepherd fight, Remus was taken before King Amulius. Romulus saved his brother and killed the king.
Romulus Becomes a God
The brother turned down the offer of becoming kings in King Amulius' kingdom and sought to start a new one together. They fought over where it should be and when Remus made fun of Romulus' kingdom, he was killed by one of Romulus' followers.
Romulus built his city and named it Roma after himself. He created a strong state with a central government and formed alliances with the Sabine state. Roma became extremely powerful and expanded in size.
After a long and successful reign, Romulus disappeared in a whirlwind and most say that he ascended into heaven to become a god in 717 B.C.E. at age 53.
