Today, we will be learning about elements, molecules, and compounds.
An element is a substance that is composed by a single type of atom. A type of atom is Carbon (C). You can identify an element if it has only one capital letter.
Does anyone know what an element is? If so, can you give an example?
A compound is a pure substance made up of two or more different elements. An example is Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3). You can identify a compound by seeing if there is more than one capital letter.
Very good, can anyone define a compound?
A molecule is a group of 2 or more atoms held together by chemical bonds. An example of a molecule as an element is oxygen. An example of a molecule as a compound is carbon dioxide. N2 is an element, and NH3 is a compound.
Wonderful. Does anyone know what a molecule is?
I'm already out of here.
Fantastic, well that is all for today, class is dismissed.
