  • Elizabeth Freeman, also known as Mumbet was an African American who worked as a slave for the Ashley family.One day while working, her friend who was another slave, had upset Mrs.Ashley. Mrs. Ashley tried to hit her with an oven shovel, but Mumbet moved in the way to take the blow. She did not wrap it up so that the judge could see it. So Mumbet sued The Ashley family. She was able to sue the Ashley family because slave owners were to give slaves a shelter minimum food and could not abuse their slaves unless they were not doing what they were told to do.
  • 1780, Ashley's home.
  • While in court Elizabeth told the judge That Mrs. Ashley had hit her out of anger and she showed him the scars that were still healing. After looking over the evidence Elizabeth Freeman won her case this was important because she was the first woman to become free by suing someone.
  • May 28, 1781, court 
  • On August 21, 1781 Elizabeth lived the rest of her life as a free woman. Her actions also influenced people to end slavery in Massachusetts.
