We learn that the protagonist Frannie's class has a new member that no one feels belongs there as he is the only white skin.
Everyone is trying to figure out the new student and why he is here instead of on the other side of the highway with the other white skinned people.
While making dinner, Frannie and her deaf brother Sean learn once their father comes home, that their mother is not sick but, is in fact pregnant once again. Frannie recalls in her mind her mother's miscarriages and sadness. Around this time everyone at school is calling the new kid "Jesus Boy" and began to wonder if Jesus has really shown up at their school.
The new kid everyone has been calling "Jesus Boy" gets slugged at by Trevor after bringing up that Trevor probably picks on him because he has a father and Trevor doesn't. Trevor misses and falls not able to use his casted up arm. "Jesus Boy" and Frannie help him after he falls into the snow even as he cusses them out the whole time.
Frannie's mother starts to feel better, Frannie understands what "hope is a thing with feathers" meaning, and we find out that "Jesus Boy" is adopted.
Frannie understands hope itself, Frannie also gains a better understanding of both "Jesus Boy" and religion. The baby seems like it's gonna make it.
