  • The American Revolution happened because America wanted freedom from England. They battled over it and the  Americans won. They were their own country.
  • The Great Comprimise
  • Two part legislature and representatives elected by the people sounds good!
  • Sure!
  • The Constitutional Congress met on May 25, 1787. Every colony had a representative except for Rhode Island. The reason they met was to edit the Articles of Confederation.
  • Northern and Southern States Comprimise
  • Slaves Shouldn't Count! No Slave Trade!
  • Count The Slaves! Keep Slave Trading!
  • The delegates wanted to completely redo the Articles of Confederation. The New Jersey plan wanted to have three branches in the Legislature and each state would have one representative regardless of population. The Virginia plan also wanted  to have three branches in the Legislature, but they wanted the amount of representatives to depend on state population.

  • The two plans compromised to a two-part legislature, representatives elected by the people and more representatives for larger states.
  • The North and the South were arguing about slavery. The South wanted their slaves to be counted in their population and for slave trading to be legal. The North wanted the opposite of both.They compromised to make 3/5 of slaves count and to push back the debate of slave trading for 20 years.
  • On September 17, 1787, the Constitution was signed. Most representatives signed it.
