  • Notice: Congress passed a protective tariff used as in amport tax on good produced in Europe. Also, An extra excise tax on manufacture, sale, or distribution on whisky.
  • Small frontier farmers crossed the Applachian Mountains to sell whisky. The farmers distilled corn into whisky which could more easily be sent to the market.
  • Western Pennsylvania Farmers did not take nicely to the new tax and beat up federal marshals and threatened to succeed from the union.
  • This is a great!
  • Hamilton saw the opportunity to show that the federal government could enforce the law.
  • About 15,000 militiamen were called up. Accompanied by Washington all the way, and Hamilton all the way they scattered the rebels w/o a single loss of life.
  • This showed that the federal government could control domestic affairs and enfrorce the law.
