Rose thought back to the time when her mother had told her to watch her brothers at the beach. The older ones were able to entertain themselves, but she mainly had to watch her youngest brother, Bing.
Chapter 7: Half and Half
Distracted by her brothers and the other chaos going on around her, she didn't realize that Bing had started to walk over to their dad, who was fishing nearby. He got closer and closer to the water.
When Rose realized that Bing was walking over, he had already started to get into the water. She stood still, not doing anything about it, knowing he would fall in. She watched Bing drown.
Rose, her 5 siblings, and her parents looked for Bing until the sun went down. Boats searched for him, but couldn't find him. However, Rose's mother didn't stop looking.
Early the next morning, Rose and her mother came back to look for Bing. Her mother brought her Bible, praying to God to forgive them. She threw in sweet tea to soothe the angry dragon in the sea, and she threw in her sapphire ring to distract it. But, Bing still never appeared. She eventually lost faith.
Rose comes back to the present, as she realizes that she has watched her marriage crumble without doing anything about it, just like what she did with Bing. Her mother advises her to try to save her marriage, even though it is helpless. At that moment, she also realizes that when her mother went back to save Bing, she knew he was dead. But, she didn't stop trying.
