I am the Lord. I present myself to you Jacob, as I have done for your family.
I will keep you safe. All of your descendants will live on this land, to the north, south, east, and west. I will travel with you and protect you until my promise is fulfilled.
Jacob settles near the land of Haran. He falls to sleep, and start dreaming about the stairway to heaven. God's angles were traveling up and down the stairs.
Abraham sees the Lord in his dream. This encounter is very important to Jacob because it show that God is willing to keep Jacob safe to keep the promise of the Abrahamic religions.

Jacob wakes up from his dream a happy man. He now knows that the Lord is on his side. He must stay faithful for the Lord to fulfill his promise. He names the land Bethel.

Jacob, his wives and children travel away from the land where they once were. He needs to get away from the angry Esau. He sends gifts to Esau through his servants.
Jacob wrestles with an unknown man. The man hurts Jacob at the hip. God gives Jacob a new name, for Jacob has done well. This demonstrates how God has face to face interactions with His people. He does not just look over them all the time.
Jacob names the place Peniel. He realizes that he has seen God face to face. He is happy that God has spared his life.
