  • In the 17th century, agricultural growth led to population growth. Thus, people needed clothes. To meet this need, inventors thought of innovations to make the production of textiles, faster and efficient.In 1712, British inventor, Thomas Newcomen, came up with an idea.
  • Finally, we can now use coal to run a steam engine. Coal is a source of energy, and when it is burned, it can heat water to create steam, which will power an engine.
  • Eventually, the steam engine powered steamships, locomotives, or trains.
  • We can now travel greater distance in less time.
  • Steam power meant that factories no longer needed to be located near waterways.
  • We can now build our factories in the city.
  • This would mean more people will be coming to the city.
