The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Fear and suspicion can wreak havoc, and hurt others.
My theme that I came up with for this story is "Fear and suspicion wreak havoc and hurt others". I think the scene where the neighborhood is accusing Les supports my theme because they are jumping to conclusions out of fear. They are assuming that just because Les has a few oddities, that he is the villan. They let their suspicion get the best of them and hurt someone they have known for years, Someone they trusted and respected. The scene where they accuse Tommy also supports the theme because they took an innocent child, who was trying to help them figure this whole mess out and accused him of being the thing he was trying to protect them from. If that isn't suspicion and fear taking over then I don't know what is. Tommy is just a child and is just as scared, if not more scared than the others and they just turn on him like that. I think the last example is the best because fear and suspicion literally drove Charlie to kill. He let his fear take over and he wasn't thinking right when he pulled that trigger on Van Horn. I think that this is the ultimate example of my theme, Fear and suspicion wreak havoc and hurt others.
The mob of people accuse Les Goodman of being an alien for a few irregularity despite knowing him for years.
The mob starts to blame Tommy, who was a young child trying too help, of being an alien.
Charlie shoots Peter Van Horn because he thought he was an alien and got scared when he came through the shadows
