  • The Struggler Continued
  • Enter The Struggler: We are introduced to "the struggler" Max. He is a Jewish man in hiding. He is far away from Himmel Street, he currently is in Stuttgart. He is currently in a closet trying not to get captured and killed. He crosses paths with Hans, Hans gift him a book, a map, a key, an ID and food. 
  • The Struggler Continued
  • 1. I'm leaving soon. You know how it is - the army
  • 3. It could be worse.. I could be you
  • 2. I'm sorry
  • Toward the end of the chapter Max pleads by repeatedly saying please to Hans Hubermann. As a reader we can infer that Hans Hubermann is going to help Max escape hiding based off the chapter and what we know about Hans' character.
  • The Struggler Continued
  • With the help of Hans Hubermann, Max had a big journey ahead of him. He was boarding a train out of Stuttgart,  as the start to his escape from hiding. He was very nervous because this was a risky life or death circumstance he was getting himself into.

  • How could I be so selfish?!?
  • Prior to leaving Stuttgart, Max befriends a man named Walter Kugler. Walter was leaving to the army he told Max he could be going through worse, he could be in Max's shoes (seeing how Max is Jewish. Max received a gift (razor,spoon, shaving cream, scissors) from Walter allowing him to clean up and pass as a German. He had to convince others and himself he was not a Jew, but a German man (Nazi).
  • During his train ride he read Mein Kampf. His life grew dependent of "my struggle" by Hitler. The book allowed him to blend in and be the German he was acting as.

  • Max finally arrived to his destination. Himmel Street. Upon his arrival he feels selfish for jeopardizing Hans' families safety by getting their help.  Eventually he copes with his guilt and heads toward the house.
